About the Artist

My name is Michelle McConnell and I am a professional mosaic artist.
I run my business from my studio in Durbanville.

In 2012 I put my business on hold to obtain a 3-year certificate in Professional Mosaic Artistry from Spier Arts Academy which I successfully completed in 2015. This has equipped me to teach a more advanced, classical style of mosaic, although I teach all levels of mosaicing. My classes focus on the artistic potential of each student. I enjoy helping my students break through their personal barriers and create beautiful pieces of art that they can be proud of.

I derived the name of my business from the big tree that is growing in my garden and that has been there for over a century. Its apparent antiquity, the mosaic of its countless leaves, and the sunlight that plays between its boughs and greenery, make it a worthy symbol for my mosaic work and classes.

In 2015, I spent two weeks in Johannesburg, in residency at Constitution Hill, where I, together with a team of fellow students, worked on translating a painting by Ricky Dyaloyi into mosaic at the Nando’s “Rites and Duties” exhibition. I’ve exhibited at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville and is currently working towards a group exhibition. I have completed commissions for corporate and individual clients.
